#4 in the first image is Mike Kardash. He was very scrappy which also made him pretty popular. Keep adding Goldie. This is like Christmas in July (or August)

I'll see what I have in the archives but that might be it for the Generals photos. I do have a question. The first image has the caption that the
Confederate flag is next to the stars & stripes. Now I always think of the Confederate flag as the one from the Dukes Of Hazzard...when I'm not
thinking of Daisy Duke...which flag is that and what are the words on it and is there a picture of it on Google images? I'm just curious.

Who's wearing the helmet next to the sprawled Generals goalie?

Do you have a year for the #2 General? John Murray wore #2 for several years, but that is not John Murray. As far as the flag question goes, I cannot
distinguish any features, but it looks like a solid field, and that would rule out the state flag, which was common with the stars and stripes during
assemblies of any kind back then. There is nothing about it that looks even remotely confederate to me. Perhaps the writer had a bad Coliseum hot dog before
the game.
Here is my guess. The city of Greensboro had a new flag, designed in 1965, with General Greene on it. It had a solid field as well. http://www.greensboro-nc....ernment/about/symbols.htm |

The photo of player #2 was before 1970, unsure of the exact year. John Murray played almost every game every season listed on internet hockey database, except
for '65-66 when he played in 50 games. Other players that season that got in a handful of games would be Wayne Mayhew (unsure of his position) and Claude
Boucher who was a winger. The number is most likely a defenseman's number. Was Mayhew a d-man?

My first thought on the flag was Marines, but I don't think they are Marines (I'm not an expert on this sort of thing). I would guess that it is a flag
from whatever corps or division they are in.

Well, the goaltender looks like Pete McDuffe, which would make this image from the 68-69 season, but I really think Pete wore a mask, but I'm not sure. If
that is McDuffe, that would make #2 John Murray, but that player looks a little larger than John was, and I cannot remember Murray wearing a helmet.
The goaltender could also be Bob Smith, which could be from any number of seasons. Bob had a job locally and stayed with the team for most of the 60's and sometimes served as an ebug. If that is not McDuffe in goal, my guess is that #2 is Ted Lanyon. He wore #4 in later years, after Carpenter left the team, and I'm not sure what Lanyon's number was in the early years before being called up, but it looks more like Lanyon than anybody else considering how little there is to go on. |

The goalie's not John Voss, correct?

Well, of all things. I am sitting in Panera Bread having coffee, and who ends up sitting beside me? Ron Muir who played with the Generals throughout the
60's and into the seventies, and later served as team captain. I asked him to ID the photo, and that is McDuffe in goal, and that is Murray wearing the
helmet. Ron told me that he had a slight concussion at one point and needed the helmet.
He seems to have a lot of answers and I can put you two in touch if you like. he confirmed that Labelle only played one game with Greensboro. |

It's just amazing how the whole EHL universe has started coming together. I ran across Muir twice this week in my research. One was that he was a 1967
Southern Division All-Star (though I think the NYTimes had him listed as "James" Muir - note to self to check even the most reliable sources).
Unfortunately, I can't remember the other sighting, but I will.

On a sad note, Ron told me that Ted Lanyon and Mike Kardash have both passed away in the last two years. Kardash would have been an interesting interview in
that he probably fought anybody that would fight in those days, and Lanyon was rather chippy as well.

Sorry to hear of Kardash and Lanyon. Could you put me in touch with Muir? That's if he'd like to be interviewed for the Brophy book and if you think
he's a good storyteller. Thanks.

Things seem to happen for a reason, so I do not mind setting something up with Muir, but I want to be careful to respect his privacy. He gave me his number,
and there is a chance that I will see him tomorrow anyway. I already mentioned the Brophy book to him, and he seemed willing. I do not know about his story
telling ability, but he knows a lot about the Generals and I feel certain he can contribute quite a bit on the league and various players in general. I will
check in with him in the next day or so and verify that I can give his number to you. It might help if I can tell him a little more about you. Can I use the
name on the youngest player story? Are you currently writing for any publications, or is there something that you have written that I can mention to him? Feel
free to e-mail me if you do not want to post specifics here. My contact info should be in my profile. I will double check and post my e-mail address if
necessary. Thanks

I still haven't figured everything out about Yuku yet. On ez board, I had contact information posted on my profile, and I cannot seem to find it here. But
you can send me a private message, and I will respond.
Tom, my offer to Goldthorpe pertains to you as well. I did not mention the website, but I will. Ron was one of the best players in the league for a number of years, ask anybody, and I'm sure he has a lot to offer if willing.

You can mention the Knoxville article. Tell him I've interviewed many former EHL players: Pat Kelly, Ken "Red" Murphy, the late Les Calder, Les
Binkley, Blaine Rydman. Tell him it's a book showing Brophy in a good light, with his cooperation. Of course there will be lots of fight stories. Thanks.

I just returned to being confused. Now on the database I find that Labelle played 24 games with the Generals in 71-72, which I could not see yesterday. As a
matter of fact, I cannot find the 1 game season now. When I saw that yesterday, I did a search and did not see the 24 games listed.
Ron may be confused as well, or perhaps not. I'll ask again. The database seems to have Ron's career ending in 1969, but I'm certain he played in the 70's. I'll contact Ron on your behalf... |

Once I get my SIHR subscrition up and running again I'll check his stats, probably next week. They have a bit more of the complete stats, especially their
junior days and death dates of players.

This is Billy Armour from about 1968. He was a well traveled, but decent player. I saw him get 5 goals in one game against Knoxville. His career in Greensboro was cut short by a pretty serious traffic accident, later he ended up in Clinton. he had 2 stays with Jersey according to his stats.

Hockeydb appear to be going through some updates - as the team search will show. I've seen a couple of anomalies in the past week or so. I think Nipper
O'Hearn's data changed 3 times in a row for me. I just checked all the various LaBelle's to see if there was operator error (no offense Greenie,
I'm a software tester by trade). I did find that they have both Don LaBelle and Marcel LaBelle playing for Knoxville in 1961-62. I wondered if he had a
brother, except I realized they have the same exact stats - so probably incorrect data, rather than a database error or brotherhood. I saw a different Marcel
LaBelle was a Greensboro goalie in the SHL for 4 games.

I'm not going to get offended if I can only find my sanity. Yesterday, I was willing to admit that I could have imagined Don Labelle playing so many games
in Greensboro, now I'm not sure what to believe. Muir didn't seem to remember Labelle playing more than one game here, and he captained the team before
he retired. Trouble is, the database has him retiring before Labelle reportedly played, but I seem to remember Muir on the team in that time frame.
I see mistakes from time to time, such as Don carter being listed as a defenseman. He most certainly was a center. Now tomorrow, if the database has Carter listed as a center, I'll know Ralph is reading. He has posted here before.... |
