Cyclones hockey team to suspend operations
Hockey is leaving Winston-Salem.
Three days after the season's final game, the Twin City Cyclones are suspending operations, said Bucky Dame, director of the Winston-Salem Entertainment Sports Complex, which includes Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum and the Joel Coliseum Annex, where the Cyclones played.
The 2008-09 season was the Cyclones' second season in Winston-Salem and first in the six-team Southern Professional Hockey League. Dame said he did not know if the city would try to court a new hockey team or if the SPHL would be interested in bringing another team to Winston-Salem.
"I think we'll just have to wait and see," Dame said. "I would say it would be fairly unlikely in this economy."
