Three days after the season's final game, the Twin City Cyclones are suspending operations, said Bucky Dame, director of the Winston-Salem Entertainment Sports Complex, which includes Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum and the Joel Coliseum Annex, where the Cyclones played. The 2008-09 season was the Cyclones' second season in Winston-Salem and first in the six-team Southern Professional Hockey League. Dame said he did not know if the city would try to court a new hockey team or if the SPHL would be interested in bringing another team to Winston-Salem. Posts: 18 (03/25/09 12:44:09) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I was a season ticket holder there the first year and after listening to jerks banging on the glass all game and the rednecks we had to sit next to that wanted giveaway prizes more than to see a hockey game we called it quites.The lack of decent fans ran us off and now the team to.Im sure there was a few great fans there just none sat near us. Enjoy youre free giveaways and maybe the guy that was wearing the glass out can get a piece from the annex and beat it at home because they wont need it anytime soon. While I am ranting a coach with a little desire and a team that makes the playoffs couldnt have hurt. And when you give postcard size coupons out for $2.00 off a ticket try to honor them. If this was a fight they would have stopped it along time ago. Thanks for the memories .

Posts: 2479 (03/28/09 17:56:15) Rocket Scientist Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	The idea of revolving franchises cannot be very appealing to those that may be considering the SPHL, but rumor has it that Pensacola and Augusta are in the picture for next season. I'm taking the wait and see approach myself. There are 4 strong franchises, but my understanding is that there will be visa problems for Canadian players, as well as problems with venues contracted into a league with a guarantee of 6 teams if the league does not replace Winston and Richmond. If this is true, look for some wheeling and dealing to be done fairly quickly, or the league could cease operations at least temporarily. The problem is that most venues in the southeast have been looked at, and in order to add teams, the SPHL will have to enlarge their footprint which will increase the low operational costs which was the very selling point of the league from the beginning. I guess it's always possible to find a merger of sorts with the EPHL, if there are any strong teams there, but that seems risky at best.

This economy has hit everybody hard, and I find it hard to believe that 2 places will suddenly jump up and say "here we are" to the SPHL, especially with the revolving door track record this league has. The ECHL certainly doesn't need to get any bigger. It is too spread out as it is. I don't see a merger with this EPHL outfit happening either because the travel costs would increase exhorbitantly. Well, according to this article, the Winston-Salem franchise is going to relocate (with an announcement apparently in the works), and they are talking to several other places, so the league itself might be OK.
